About Macedonia

Skopje is the capital of the Republic of Macedonia; it is in the Povardarie region and is the largest and most diverse city in the country. Skopje has been occupied by many different people since its foundation. This is evidenced by the several Byzantine churches and monasteries around the city, also by a few Roman sites, such as Scupi and Skopje's Aqueduct. However, the group that left the greatest mark on Skopje were the Ottomans. The Ottomans ruled Macedonia for hundreds of years and built a large number of mosques and other buildings.

Today, Skopje is becoming a modern city. Home to about a quarter of the entire population of the country, it is also home to many different types of people. Besides the majority of Macedonians, many Albanians, Turks, Romanies, Serbs, Bosnians and others call Skopje home.

Skopje Macedonia is a landlocked Balkan nation of mountains, lakes and ancient towns with Ottoman and European architecture. The capital, Skopje, is known for its sprawling Old Bazaar quarter and historic buildings turned museums, including the National Gallery of Macedonia, housed in a 15th-century Turkish bath complex. The southern city Ohrid, on a lake of the same name, has a medieval townscape and hilltop castle.

A landlocked country, the Republic of Macedonia has borders with Serbia to the north, Bulgaria to the east, Greece to the south and Albania to the west. It constitutes approximately the northwestern third of the larger geographical region of Macedonia, which also comprises the neighbouring parts of northern Greece and smaller portions of southwestern Bulgaria and southeastern Albania.

The country's geography is defined primarily by mountains, valleys, and rivers. The capital and largest city, Skopje, is home to roughly a quarter of the nation's 2.06 million inhabitants. The majority of the residents are ethnic Macedonians and South Slavic people. Albanians form a significant minority at around 25 percent, followed by Turks, Romanies, Serbs, and others.
